Maimonides Leaders Fellowship

Why have over 2000 Graduates completed the MEOR Maimonides Leaders Fellowship?

Here in school you are looking to expand your intellectual and social horizons as you prepare yourself for a career that is both satisfying and profitable. No less than our academic pursuits, our Jewish identity needs development if it is to be a relevant part of our lives and allow us to live a more inspired and meaningful future. The MEOR Maimonides Leaders Fellowship at The University of Maryland is dedicated to “connecting modern leaders with ancient wisdom”. You are the leaders of tomorrow, and Judaism’s timeless messages have allowed it to be an extraordinarily powerful force in human history. By introducing one to the other we believe we can bring about a more educated, passionate, and inspired Jewish tomorrow. As an added incentive, an in recognition of participant’s commitment of valuable time, a cash stipend of $300 is awarded to each fellow upon completion of the MEOR Maimonides Leaders Fellowship program.
I want to lead the Jewish future

Through guided group discussion, exploration of classic Jewish texts, and the insight of our experienced MEOR Maimonides Leaders Fellowships educators you will discover your Jewish identity in an entirely new way. Our educational content is constantly reviewed to ensure it is engaging, substantive, personal, and empowering.

As with all of MEOR’s programs, our goal is to allow you to connect in a personal and experiential way. As part of Maimonides you will participate in a full Shabbat experience, a Jewish holiday event, a Jewish wedding, and a formal graduation dinner, where students share their impressions of the program and receive their graduation certificates and stipends. Each of these events will serve to crystallize the concepts you’ve learned and further bond you with your MEOR Maimonides Leaders Fellowship cohort.

Because our learning has such a strong discussion component, and because we share multiple Jewish experiences together as part of the MEOR Maimonides Leaders Fellowship curriculum, you are bound to form social bonds with like-minded peers that are anything but superficial. Additionally, our full staff is here for you throughout Maimonides and the rest of your college experience to help you take ownership and pride in your Jewish future.

Maimonides FAQ

Q. Is a Jewish education required for acceptance?

A. No. There are no requirements regarding the level of Jewish education. In fact, the Fellowship is geared towards students with the most limited Jewish backgrounds. Our commitment is to service the “lowest common denominator” . However, because we explore each topic both on a emory and more sophisticated level, students with more extensive background can gain a tremendous amount. However, due to funding limitations and a desire to maintain a comfortable atmosphere for those with minimal background, we cannot accept students whose background would overqualify them – such as those who attended an observant full-time Jewish high school.

Q. What is the goal of the program and in what way is it a Leadership Fellowship?

A. The MEOR Maimonides Leaders Fellowship aims to empower modern-day Jewish college students with the information and inspiration necessary to become passionate Jewish leaders of the next generation. Our belief at MEOR is that ignorance of Jewish texts and traditions is the greatest impediment against young Jews making Judaism an integral feature of their lives and taking an active role in their communities. Through educational lectures, guest speakers, and experiential field trips (Shabbat programs, cultural and religious events, etc.), Maimonides offers qualified students the opportunity to immerse themselves in a traditional Jewish environment, where they can grapple maturely with great life questions and explore how ancient Jewish wisdom can connect with modern Jewish leaders.

Q. Why do I get paid and who is paying me?

A. The payment is for your commitment and time.  College is a busy place and your time is precious and we recognize that.  The people who donate care deeply for the Jewish people and want to see the next generation properly educated and willing to use their talent and energies to help strengthen Jewish communities wherever they choose to settle.

Q. What are the requirements for receiving the stipend?

A. The Maimonides stipend is pro-rated based on attendance and participation in Fellowship activities, including seminars, off-campus trips and journals.
